Crazy hair day at Marist. Every year, the week of the annual Sports Day, there is a Spirit Week. Last year, Isaac won for the 2nd grade with his crazy 'do' so this year we really out did ourselves. Unfortunately, there was no judging this year. However, both Isaac and Brynn had a field trip on that day so they both went out into public in Japan looking like this. Brynnie called hers a 'water fountain' hairstyle and Isaac went with the 'mohawk, 4 mini-braids, 3 pony tail' look.
The rest of the week was jammies day, culture day, and a few others I can't remember. On Friday was the annual Sports Day which if you remember from my previous long jumping post
we had been practicing for for a few weeks. Unfortunately, even though Bryce had taken off the day, he was called to Singapore on a last minute business trip so I had to go it alone. No easy task, I tell you.

We arrived around 9am and the festivities immediately began. The kids are dressed in their "team" colors. There are four teams and any ribbons that you win individually for the day go to your house team tally. It was COLD that day. In fact, Brynn's teacher has been at the school for 20 years and she said that in her whole 20 years, it had never been that cold. Last year, we were worried about dehydration and sunburn. This year, it was frostbite (well, not quite that bad but pretty darned close.) The kids competed in long jump, relays, dashes, etc. My grand example of what not to do in long jump must have paid off because both kids brought home the blue ribbon for their grade in long jump. Other than that, the kids did really well and brought home several ribbons. Tanner was thrilled because he even received a ribbon for being a great fan. Of course, it wasn't really his choice as I dragged him back and forth on the giant field while running back and forth between both kids' events. Next year, I don't know what we'll do when we have 3 kiddos at the school...ah!
A week later, it was the science fair. Did I mention that Bryce got to miss out on helping with the ending of that project because of his business trip, too? But I am not bitter or holding a grudge :0)
The kids had to do science projects and prepare an oral presentation to give to each of three judges. The results were given out this past week. Out of all of the first, second and third graders that submitted science fair projects, Brynnie placed 2nd! We were so excited. While Isaac's project didn't work out as well as we had hoped (the microscope slides we prepared didn't work) we thought his project was pretty awesome. He molded bread and then we tried to identify if different types of mold grew on different types of bread. His project title was, "Got Mold?" and he drew a piece of bread with a green moldy moustache on it. We got a kick out of his idea. Brynn's project was whether a frozen or room temperature candle would burn faster. Her title was "The Burning Question". They both worked so hard and we are proud of their efforts!
